Will A New European Grand Prix Necessarily Be Good For Formula One?
A Majorcan Grand Prix? It's tempting, but honestly, it's more tempting to pass. Unusual as it surely is to hold a race on a small island location, it's not necessarily undesirable for that reason. Short of objecting to nearly ever race on the F1 calender, it would be daft for me to suggest that a near tropical location would be somehow a bad thing for a Formula One race. Instead, I just feel that the whole point of having a 'new' venue is rather undermined if it's in the 'old' world, i.e. Yet another European race. Time was, Japan was the token Asian venue and the Americas filled in the cracks between the traditional European venues. This isn't Formula One as we know it now. The addition of Grand Prix for Abu Dhabi and Bahrain has given us new markets. China and Malaysia have expanded old ones. Honestly, I really shouldn't complain that we are all now able to rent Cala san Vicente villas to so see one of the world's greatest sporting events at close proximity. But when Spain already has its Catalunya circuit enshrined in the sport, it seems daft that we're constantly revisiting the Balearics for our Motor Racing fix.
The 'Majorca Grand Prix' is being positioned as a replacement for the current European venue held in Valencia. Street races are rarely exciting events, and Valencia is no exception. It's basically Monaco with half the charm. It's a race so dull that I recommend that, when you travel to holiday cottages, don't event bother with it, there's far more interesting things to be done with your time. It really is my opinion that looking for an alternative in the Mediterranean to this venue is pointless?
Now, counting the environmental cost of a Formula One race is never a particularly popular thing to do. The site of the new venue would be Llucmajor, in the south of the island. Aside from the occasional noise pollution, to we honestly believe that the Grand Prix is worth uprooting vast swathes of Countryside for?? With emerging economies making mega bucks and deservedly snatching slots on the Grand Prix itinerary from European venues, will we really be booking Villas in Puerto Pollensa for more than a couple of years?
